Pub 'fined £8k' for Wi-Fi copyright infringement

From ZDNet UK -

The owner of a pub offering free WiFi has been fined £8,000 because a user unlawfully downloaded copyrighted material. The case is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK with the fine being recently levied in a civil case.

Laws in the UK surrounding open WiFi networks and the liability of those running them are actually a grey area. Measures brought in under the Digital Economy Bill does not apply to a business operating an open WiFi spot since it could be classified as a public communications service provider, which would make it exempt. According to the terms of the bill, only subscribers can be targeted with sanctions.

However a public communications service provider must, under the terms of the Data Retention Regulations, retain records for 12 months on communications passing through their network. This data includes user IDs, the times and dates of access, and the online destinations that were being accessed, although the actual content of the communications cannot be retained without the user's permission, due to data-protection laws. But there is a get-out clause in the Data Retention Regulations, in that no provider has to keep such records unless they are notified by the government to do so. Although this clause might itself be non-compliant with the EU data-retention laws.

Pixel Qi displays due in December

From Electronista -

Pixel Qi has revealed plans to mass-produce its 3qi displays in December, missing its original Fall target by just a few months. The displays present a major breakthrough as they can operate both like a full color LCD but behave like grayscale e-paper either to save energy or to become readable in bright daylight.

The company also plans to develop a very low-cost TV for parts of the developing world, where ample, regular power is uncommon. The screen would consume less than 10W and could run off of a battery or even a solar panel. Target price is $100.

Embryo VIA C7-M powered netbook spotted in the wild

From Liliputing -

NetbookNews.de has reported the sighting of another new VIA-powered netbook, a 10.2″ model from Embryo. Too bad, it is not that well designed, with the charging tip located smack in the middle of the unit’s right-hand side. In addition the plastic shell has a decidedly brittle look. Upside is it might have a low price, probably $180.

How To Run Google Chrome OS From A USB Drive [Windows]

Makeuseof.com has posted a tutorial on making a Chrome OS bootable USB thumb drive. But before you rush over to download the OS, you should know that it is still in the very early stages of development so there are a lot of stuff that don’t work. It is also very simplistic by design, as it is intended for use on netbooks. In fact, when you launch Chrome OS, all you get is pretty much a web browser.

At any rate, you will need a 4GB drive, a computer that allows booting from a USB drive and has a network adapter. And a bit of luck. And of course, Chrome OS.

AViiQ Aluminium Laptop Stand

From Gizmodo -

Above photo shows the $80 AViiQ portable, folding aluminum stand that supports up to 17" units. It actually matches the MacBook pretty well, angling the keyboard at a comfortable 12 degrees. It also folds down easily to an absurdly thin, near-weightless strip of aluminum that can squeeze into just about any bag. Unfortunately, it feels like flimsy, pop can aluminum than unibody Mac aluminum.

Qualcomm mirasol color video ebook readers to ship in 2010

From Slashgear -

Qualcomm is showing off its 5.7" mirasol ebook reader capable of full color and video playback, with minimal impact on battery life. While photo above is that of a mock-up, the display panel is an actual working unit.

Per Qualcomm, mirasol is able to enhance battery performance. A color e-ink video-capable Kindle would last roughly a day using the same battery; the same unit with a mirasol panel would last a week. In addition, the mirasol panel performs best in bright lighting. Text is crisp and readable at a XGA 1,024 x 768 resolution and around 220ppi.

Target delivery is H2 2010 and Qualcomm is already working with multiple OEMs.

Asus planning to acquire Toshiba notebook line

From Digitimes -

Having previously outlined plans to become one of the top three notebook vendor in the world by 2011, Asus is now announcing it is in talks with Toshiba on the possibility of it acquiring the latter's notebook business. Per company chair Jonney Shih, talks have started but so far nothing has been finalized.

AT&T adds Samsung Go to netbook lineup, dumbs it down with Windows 7 Starter

From Engadget -

AT&T has added a pair of Windows 7 Starter netbooks to its stable, the Samsung Go and the Acer Aspire One. Both will set you back $199 upfront (after rebate) plus a two-year data contract at either $35 a month for a 200MB cap or $60 a month for a 5GB cap.

Most people buy the $60 plan, meaning they fork over a minimum $1,639 over two years for a last-gen netbook running an OS that doesn't even let you change the desktop wallpaper. Not quite a good deal when you can buy an XP netbook on sale and get a regular free-on-contract USB data card that you can use on multiple machines.

Qualcomm Shows Lenovo Smartbook

From PC World -

Qualcomm recently showed off a Lenovo-made Snapdragon-based smartbook that will be formally launched at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It sported a Linux-based UI that consisted of six large widgets, including ones for e-mail and Facebook and will reportedly support HD video. And while the Snapdragon chipset is ARM based, which seldom supports Flash, the smartbook was demonstrated playing YouTube videos. It has also already secured operator backing from AT&T.

A smartbook is basically a mini-netbook, with feature-wise, being somewhere between a amartphone and a netbook. It also has a lower price and longer battery life than the latter.

Intel changes mind on netbooks: "Dual core Atom 330 is too hot"

From Newswireless.net
-

Intel has recently decided to restrict the use of the dual core Atom 330 from netbooks, due to the thermal issues associated with the processor and need for an internal cooling system. This disappointing news may well explain reported dumping of the chip, and also Intel's rumored "fast track" plans for the next generation of netbook processors.

The clamp-down on netbook use emerged recently when computer manufacturer Haleron launched a two-chip N270 model, instead of the dual-core 330, because benchmarks suggested it was not only better on power drain, but also for office tasks.

The N330 only started shipping in September but is rumored to be available from Intel's at discounts as high as £39.

Shanzhai rotating touchscreen netbook, Win 7 ready?

From Shanzai -
A rotating touch screen netbook from an unknown manufacturer is now available in China for about 2500RMB or approx $370. The device appears to be based on the Menlow platform. Specs include the N270 Atom, 945GSE, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth, camera, card reader, built-in 3G, and a 10.1" touch screen.

Unfortunately the software lacks refinement. Its OS, Windows XP, was simply not designed for a touch screen. The question then is the device Windows 7 ready?

From Shanzai -

An obscure Shenzhen ODM is pushing a Dell Latitude 2100 clone, marketing it to school children. Litl Webbook Banks On Cute, Overlooks Practical

From Gizmodo -

The 12" Litl Webbook can flip from laptop to easel, making it aesthetically pleasing while watching movies or displaying photos. But it is not a tablet — its flexibility is limited and it has no touchscreen.

Specs are typical - 1.6GHz Atom, 1GB RAM but with just 2GB of flash storage. That's because the Webbook wants to be a cloud computing machine that runs widgets instead of a full OS. It is a good idea, unfortunately at $700, the price isn't.

Motorola Droid Review

The folks at Gizmodo has reviewed the Motorola Droid and are pretty impressed with it. Their conclusion is simple: If you don't buy an iPhone, buy a Droid. Meaning it is the second best smartphone you can buy, even with some serious flaws including a crappy camera.

The platform also has a lot of potential. Android 2.0 itself is a remarkable update of the Google mobile OS, with new navigation app, new contacts/social network syncing, better email management, better browser though music and video management still fall short of the iPhone.
