MSI OS X on the MSI Wind, Before it's Released

From Gizmodo -

The MSI Wind has not been released yet but Jav of the Insanely Mac Spanish forum has posted some photos showing the computer running a presumably hacked Mac OS X -

"Well, here it is. The new MSI Wind running Kalyway 10.5.2 (modified Leopard install). I still have to make some small adjustments, like the resolution and the wireless network card, but I couldn't resist posting these images that I'm sure will get the interest of more than one person. Ethernet and Bluetooth work right out of the box, so I'm really expecting a lot from this small notebook. — Translated from Spanish."

Debian To Replace Xandros on the Eee PC?

From Linux Loop -

Per a message in the Debian Eee PC mailing list, Asus and Debian are working on a version for the Eee PC. If so, a customized Debian distro would make it much easier to install new apps and to do more complicated tasks, something which has so far restricted Linux newbies from fully utilizing their subnotebooks. And if the current user interface is maintained, the Eee PC will be able to enhance its consumer appeal.

MSI Wind

Submitted by Vito Cassisi -

Gadgetzone has reviewed the MSI Wind and it verdict is if you can live with its design flaws and need sub-notebook right now, the MSI Wind is best choice. Otherwise, it's better to wait for other Atom-based offerings. Downside includes sub-standard screen hinge, balance issues with 6-cell battery, small trackpad and thin mouse button.

Hopefully the touted 1,500 plus improvements actually make their way into the condensed version, which can function alongside FireFox 2.0 Portable Edition under the PortableApps suite.

1st Billion Reached - Is Asus still targeting the 2nd Billion?

According to Reuters, a new Gartner study indicates the number of personal computers in use around the world has surpassed 1 billion, with strong growth in emerging markets set to double the number of PCs by early 2014. In addition, mature markets accounted for 58% of the 1st billion but would only account for about 30% of the 2nd billion.

This is basically in line with Asus' initial announcement of targeting th 2nd billion with its Eee PC line. However inasmuch as price is a critical consideration for this target market (3rd world countries, people who previously can't afford computers, etc.), Asus' recent introduction of higher priced models seem to indicate the company is headed towards the opposite direction. Unless of course, it continues to sell the original 701 line and hopefully at a reduced price.

Otherwise, come school opening this fall, the market might just crown a new leader in this emergent low-cost subnotebook segment.

MSI Wind Delayed, But Not For Long

Per Gizmodo,
MSI Wind's US release has been delayed to June 27. Reason for the delay was not given but Gizmodo speculates model shipping on June 27th will have a 3-cell battery (as opposed to 6-cell) because of industry-wide battery shortages. 6-cell models should be around in July.

Asus Eee PC 901 20G Linux Edition

Trusted Reviews has given the Asus Eee PC 901 Linux a 9/10 in its review, contending that at £319, the unit provides astounding value for what you're getting.

Aside from having the newer Intel Atom processor, the 901 also has a bigger 8.9" 1024 x 600 LCD, a bigger 6-cell 6600mAh battery that provides 4:45 hours of use (with WiFi on). The trade-off, of course, is the heavier weight at 1.1kg.

New features include Bluetooth, Dolby Sound Room audio (XP version only) and, incredibly, high bandwidth Wireless-N Wi-Fi, 1.3 MP webcam, and dual integrated microphones. Another useful addition is the YOStore online storage, which enables you to store up to 20GB of data online.

With 1GB RAM and the light Xandros OS, performance is snappy and responsive. The Atom processor has a throttling scheme allows three performance modes, Power Saver, High Performance and Super Performance, allowing an optimal balance of performance and battery life.

Keyboard is, unfortunately, still slightly cramped and prevents the 901 from being ideal for writing long documents. The caveat, of course, is that it is not meant for such tasks. After all, it is foremost a cheap and extremely portable computer that can fit in a small bag and be enjoyed anywhere. And in this aspect, the Eee PC 901 is the best.

Ubuntu Eee goes gold!

From the Ubuntu Eee site -

Ubuntu Eee which started as a one man quest but which quickly developed into a team project has gone gold. It is different from other Linux distros in that it is intended for a specific computer model, namely the Asus Eee PC. In addition, various applications have been bundled to make it a complete environment.

Ubuntu Eee 8.10 will be even more customized for the small screen and may use the Netbook Remix interface.

Here Comes the Asus 'Freee PC'

Mike Elgan of Internet News has an interesting insight on how Asus has redefined the subnotebook category with its Eee PC. Its trendsetting product hit the mark in terms of smallness, light weight, and most importantly, affordability.

But as the number of mini-me's begin to crowd the market, he expect it to become too price competitive that the pricing model will eventually switch to something similar to subsidized mobile phone offers (sign up for a service and get a heavily-subsidized or even free unit). As he noted, such offers are already being offered. In the UK, PowerupMobile.com is giving an Eee PC with a two-year contract while the Royal Bank of Canada has switched from giving away toasters to giving away Eee PCs for new accounts.

With production costs expected to make subnotebooks even more affordable, he predicts such units will be given away in the U.S. starting middle of next year with contracts for mobile broadband services, online storage and synchronization services, software, and even non-technology products and services such as car sales.

As he aptly put it - it's a wonderful time to be a nerdy cheapskate. :)

How to remove Viruses from USB Drives

Madhur Kapoor has a good tutorial in his blog on how to prevent viruses in USB flash drives from infecting your notebook. Common viruses such as Ravmon, New Folder.exe, Orkut is banned, etc. spread rapidly through such drives and most anti virus programs are unable to detect them and even if they do, in most cases they are unable to delete the file, only quarantine it.

In Windows, one quick way of protection is to check for the files in the USB. A window similar to the shown below pops up whenever you plug in a USB drive:

USB

Don’t click OK , click ‘Cancel’ instead. Open the Command Prompt by typing ‘cmd‘ in the run box. In the command prompt type the drive letter: and press enter . Now type dir /w/a and press enter.

This will display a list of the files in the USB drive. Look for the following files:

  • Autorun.inf
  • Ravmon.exe
  • New Folder.exe
  • svchost.exe
  • Heap41a
  • or any other exe file which may be suspicious.

If any of the above files are present, then the USB drive is likely infected. To delete these, go to the Start Menu -> Run. Enter cmd to run the command prompt.

In command prompt type attrib -r -a -s -h *.* and press enter. This will remove the Read Only, Archive, System and hidden file attributes from all the files in the USB drive. Now delete the files using the command del filename. example del Ravmon.exe. Delete all the files that are suspicious. Now remove the drive and plug it again. In most cases, the culprit will be the “Autorun.inf” file which runs whenever someone clicks OK in the dialog window above.

Alternately, you can also scan your USB drive with an anti-virus program but you need to make sure the anti-virus program has the latest database of viruses. Otherwise it might not be able to recognize the newer viruses.

Another method is to disable the Autoplay feature of USB drives. For this you will need Tweak UI. You can read the instructions on how to use it, as well as to download it, here.

Asus Eee As Cheap, Tiny Music PC: Guitar Rig 3, Linux Tips

Create Digital Music forum members and readers have been using the Asus Eee PC as a programmable, dedicated sound machine and synth. All for the price of the cheapest closed-box, name-brand piece of music gear

Others, like reader Dan Stowell has written a comprehensive tutorial on using SuperCollider, the powerful, free sound synthesis engine. Custom GUIs can also be added using a free Java-based tool. Linux also supports various music tools that lend themselves to a lower-end machine, like music tracker MilkyTracker.

There are also Windows software. From the NI forums, a group of intrepid Guitar Rig 3 users have fired up XP and have a pretty usable, self-contained Guitar Rig computer. The trick is, you do need modded video drivers to make use of 1000×600 resolution, thus accommodating the user interface.

VIA Nano Processor Announced

From Wired -

Earlier this year VIA announced its new line of Isaiah processors, designed to revolutionize mobile computing via lightning fast computing speeds and low power consumption. As a follow-through, it now has introduced a new processor family called Nano. The line consists of 64-bit superscalars that can run up to four times faster yet consume the same amount of power as the current VIA Isaiah chipsets do. Which mean they could provide subnotebooks insane boosts in performance and function. Nano-powered units should be able to run Photoshop smoothly, playback Blu-ray movies without a snag.

Weird details about those Dell Mini-Inspiron photos

By now most readers are familiar with those photos of Dell's yet-unnamed Mini-Inspiron looking subnotebook the company has let loose on the Internet. While there are apparently very little details yet, we can hazard some guesses. But first, why is the Dell logo upside-down in the photo below?

Next, if you look closely at the next photo, and as pointed out by Liliputing, there are no Function keys. Although a comment posted by m on that site noted there is a large blue FN key, indicating function key mapping should be available.

Laptop Mag's MSI Wind (Win XP) Review

Laptop Mag has reviewed the MSI Wind Windows XP model and has given it 4.5 out 5 stars. Highlights of the review -

(You can read the full specifications here.)

Physical unit - Low-luster finish is resistant to fingerprint smudges while the size is small enough to fit an oversized handbag/slim briefcase At 3.4 lbs with the AC adapter, it was hardly noticeable.

Keyboard - close to full-size, matte keys offer springy feedback. Touch typists should have no problems even for extended periods. But the 2.0x1.7" touchpad is disappointingly small and its single bar is less than ideal.

Large Display - the 10" 1024 x 600 display is much easier on the eyes than the typical 7" or 8.9" screens of subnotebooks.

1.3MB webcam - works well in Skype video chat. However the microphone picked up a bit of background noise. However, using a headset solved the problem.

Performance - the MSI Wind outperforms other system in its class. Boot-up time is 34 seconds. While not for 3D gamers, the graphics performance is still better than similar systems. The Wind includes a TurboDrive button, which overclocks the CPU by as much as 20% when plugged in.

Battery life - Reviewer at 5:30 hrs with WiFi turned off, with WiFi turned on, the battery lasted just over 4 hours.

WiFi - connected easily to WPA-protected access point. The radio managed 14.5 Mbps, and 7.7 Mbps from 50 feet away.

Asus Eee PC 901 internals hint future upgrades and options

jkkmobile has disassembled the Asus Eee PC 901. Some of their discoveries:

The SSD is still 2 separate drives as there are only 4 flash modules/side on the psi-e card. 2 x 8 = 16 so to make 20GBs there needs to be 4GB separate SSD.

There is also a SIM card slot and an extra PCI-E slot so 3G HSDPA option is available. Moreover, the shape and size of the cavity highlighted above, together with the zif connector, should accommodate a 1.8" drive. That means WWAN and bigger drive options/upgrades should be available.

Microsoft Extends Windows Offering to Nettop Devices

From Microsoft -

TAIPEI, Taiwan — June 3, 2008 — Today at Computex, Microsoft Corp. announced that following the success of Windows on netbooks, the Windows offering is being extended to include nettop devices. Netbooks are commonly referred to as ultralow-cost PCs (ULCPCs) and were originally intended for students and other first-time PC customers in emerging markets. Nettop refers to desktops that are ultralow-cost.

In April, Microsoft announced the worldwide extension of the availability of Windows for this emerging class of devices that are primarily used for e-mail, accessing the Internet and instant messaging, and the company is seeing much demand among industry partners who want to ensure that customers can have the benefits of Windows on both new and existing devices.

Customers are asking for Windows on these devices because the experience is familiar to existing PC users and easy to learn for customers who are new to computing. Customers want to be able to take advantage of the wide range of applications, devices and online experiences supported by Windows today. Microsoft partners also appreciate Windows-based solutions for these computers because they already know how to build and support high-quality systems that are powered by Windows.

The marketplace for this emerging class of computers has expanded, and Microsoft and its partners are now seeing interest in these devices in developed markets as well, especially as companion devices in multi-PC households. As demand for this new category has grown, both customers and partners have expressed their strong preference that Windows be the operating system on these devices.

“Customers and partners have made it clear to us that they want Windows on their netbooks and nettops,” said Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president of the Original Equipment Manufacturer Division at Microsoft. “We are committed to providing Windows solutions for these devices, helping to ensure a high-quality experience for both our partners and customers.”

The company has been investing in this emerging hardware category in a variety of ways, with its efforts around Windows in emerging markets and by extending the availability of Windows to developed markets worldwide. The special class of mobile and desktop devices known as netbooks or nettops is optimized for Internet-based activities such as e-mail, Web browsing and instant messaging. By making it possible for OEMs to offer Windows on these devices, Microsoft enables consumers to have the familiar computing experience they have come to expect, as well as a robust platform that can integrate with their other computers and devices.

“We have seen much demand for Windows on the Eee PC,” said Jerry Sheen, CEO of ASUSTek Computer. “It is great that Microsoft is addressing this customer demand and providing a Windows solution on these devices, which will provide a familiar computing experience.”

“The Asus Eee PC has been and continues to be a very successful product for Cellnet,” said Julian Phua, general manager of Cellnet Group Ltd. “The feedback from our customers in retail and the reseller channel is that they overwhelmingly prefer to sell the Eee PC running with Windows. To move our existing Linux inventory, we are now offering our channel the option of purchasing Windows XP with their Eee units so they can provide a compelling offering for customers.”

Microsoft is working with more than 20 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Acer Inc., ASUSTek Computer Inc., BenQ Corp., Dell Inc., First International Computer Inc., Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd., HP, Inventec Corp., Lenovo, Medion AG, Micro-Star International Co., Positivo Informatica, Pegatron Corp., Quanta Computer Inc. and Wistron Corp. to deliver Windows-based offerings for consumers.

Qualcomm Says Windows Mobile 7 Key for Mini-laptops

From Yahoo! News -

Mobile phone chip maker Qualcomm is showing off a Linux-based mini-laptop by Taiwan-based Inventec that could cost around US$299 and offer quick wireless 3G Internet access. However Qualcomm VP Luis Pineda said Windows Mobile 7, which is made for mobile phones and UMPCs, will be friendlier than previous versions. In fact, Windows Mobile 7 could be a key for mobile phones in the future if they hope to keep up with the growing market for 7" - 10" WiFi-equipped mini-notebooks that runs either Windows XP or Linux distros.

Current mobile phones can't run PC programs because they use mobile phone processors. That has prompted Microsoft to develop the Windows CE platform which has evolved into the current Windows Mobile for it to penetrate the market segment. But Qualcomm now hopes Windows Mobile 7 will make mobile phones based on its Snapdragon chipsets a more vital competitor to subnotebooks as it takes on PC processor makers Intel, AMD and Via.
