Emtec Gdium Liberty 1000 now well under $300

From Liliputing -

The Emtec Gdium Liberty 1000 is different from other netbooks with its 900MHz Loongson CPU and removable USB key called the G-Key, from where the entire OS runs. This makes it easy for users to share a unit without mixing up their settings and data.

It was first released this summer at €349, or more than $500. But Amazon is now selling it for $265.99 plus free shipping. The caveat is its MIPS-based Loongson CPU can’t run Windows XP, Vista, or 7. Instead it comes with a customized Mandriva Linux that includes widgets for interacting with desktop and web services.

Intel Atom Processor Developer Program for Mobile Devices to Spur New Wave of Applications

From Intel -

To encourage the creation of innovative applications for Intel® Atom™ processor-based products, Intel Corporation today launched the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program for independent software vendors (ISVs) and developers.

The program provides a framework for developers to create and sell software applications for netbooks with support for handhelds and smart phones available in the future. Through the program, developers seeking to reduce overhead and streamline the creation of new applications may also license development tools and application modules directly from other independent developers and ISVs.

To provide the broadest choice of applications across platforms, the Intel Atom Developer Program will support multiple operating systems and run-time environments. Run-times enable developers to use a single code base to support multiple device platforms and avoid extensive reprogramming, thereby reducing development costs and time-to-market. Run-times such as Microsoft Silverlight allow developers to access multiple classes of customers and deliver rich applications for Windows and Moblin-based environments using a single toolset, Visual Studio and the .NET Framework.

The program offers a streamlined and transparent process that will take the developer from application creation through testing and, finally, to the go-to-market stage. Intel is working with netbook original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other partners to create application storefronts through which validated applications will be sold.

Developers can learn more about the program, APIs, validation process and application store framework through appdeveloper.intel.com. Applications for ISV and software developer memberships are currently being accepted. Members will be given access to tools and resources that will aid the pre-development process. The Intel Atom Developer Program software development kits will be available to members in late fall.

The same sources indicated pressure came from Intel and ODMs (original design manufacturers). Still, just exactly how Microsoft will decide on the pricing structure vis-a-vis the other versions remains to be seen.

Unplug Your Laptop Regularly (When In Doubt)

From Smarterware -

Should notebook computers be unplugged while being used to prolong battery life?

Yes and no. While battery technology has improved through the years, some manufacturers, like Apple, which uses lithium-ion batteries does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time.

Others are more ambiguous. Both Dell and HP does not provide info on the matter. Neither does Asus. Judging from online posts, users have mixed experience.

So what's the answer? The best approach is to follow your portable's user manual. And if it does not say anything? Well, it is up to you.

-------

Personally, I take off the battery and plug my netbooks/laptops directly when I am not mobile.

Per IDC, worldwide PC shipments fell 2.4% on year in Q2 2009, while shipment value was down 19.1% over the same period.

Consumer portables were the only area of growth, with shipments increasing 44% from a year ago – from a low of 28% growth and approaching the 44-55% range of 2007 and 2008. However, commercial portable growth remained at negative 16%, and desktops declined 17% as businesses limited spending and the market continued its shift to portables.

Within consumer portables, traditional notebooks recovered to 13% on-year growth from almost no growth in Q1, but shipment value was down 6%. The netbook share of consumer portables was up to almost 26% from just 5% a year ago. With netbooks averaging just over US$400 each, compared to more than US$900 for traditional notebooks, the shift has a significant impact on shipment value.

VIA And ARM Still Trying to Beat Intel Atom And Get Inside Netbooks

From Gizmodo -

Both ARM and VIA are currently showing improved chips that aim to compete with Intel's Atom for netbooks.

ARM's processors are found in most smartphones, but its new dual core 2 GHZ (max) Cortex-A9 is targeted at netbooks or smartbooks. Battery life is great, but ARM still can't run Windows XP or 7. However, for Chrome OS netbooks it may just work.

VIA, on the other hand, is gunning after notebooks with 10 to 12" displays. They are pairing their VIA C7-M ULV or Nano CPU with its VX855 chipset which adds 1080p HD support. VIA has always had performance, but battery life is its Achilles heel.

Bottom line, the new products from the two companies still fall short of Intel's Atom.

MagicJack modded into Asus Eee 1000HE

mikend of the Unofficial MagicJack Support forum has integrated a MagicJack dongle into his Asus 1000HE. The regular phone then connects with a simple headphone jack and plug. As he said pictures do more justice than words:

He took the MJ out of its shell and placed it on the right hand side of the netbook, under the motherboard.

He then removed the phone jack from the MJ and soldered the leads to a standard 1/8th inch headphone receiver. Then he epoxied the receiver onto the case and bored a hole for the jack.

He ran 5 wires from a usb slot across the top of the motherboard and through a preexisting hole on the other side.

CTL 2Go E10 Classmate PC for Kids

From Gizmodo -

The new 10" CTL 2Go E10 Classmate PC may be durable, but it looks outdated and is plain downright ugly. Both the Dell Latitude 2100 education netbook (which comes in school bus yellow and ball field green) and the ASUS Disney Netpal Eee PC are a whole lot cuter.

Moreover it has a very cramped keyboard although the Shift key is full-sized. Nevertheless this might be a moot point since the target market has small hands. Its trackpad is also nicely expanded and has a dedicated scroll bar. And while it lacks style, it makes up for it in durability. Its hard drive is shock mounted and the chassis can withstand a 70 cm drop. Its keyboard is spill resistant, too.

Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker hands-on: Ubuntu like you've never seen it before

Engadget has a hands-on video of the Sharp PC-Z1 Netwalker. It is shown running a full Ubuntu install at a relatively high resolution and a rather snappy pace. Sadly it's nearly impossible to use. Its optical track pad is too small to use. Combined that with a too high pixel density, it makes navigation downright a painful affair.

Given that mainland manufacturers have been using ARM processors for years in mobile phones and appear not to have any loyalty or affinity for a specific platform or OS, if the initial units sell well, we can expect a myriad of designs and colors by mid-2010.

Windows 7 closes on Linux market share

From TG Daily -

Windows 7 might not be officially available until October 22, but the latest numbers from W3C show it's rapidly closing on the aggregate market share of all types of Linux distros. As of July, Linux had 2.02% of the OS market, Win7 was already up to 1.24 percent.

Windows overall still has 86.56 percent, which contains a few (0.14 percent) luddites still hanging on to Win 98. The venerable Windows XP still rules the roost with 61.52 percent, followed by Vista on 21.95 percent and OSX a distant third on 6.92 percent.

Second favorite

Mozilla fans will no doubt be pleased to note that Firefox 3.0 is nibbling at the heels of IE7 with 23.03 and 24.74 percent respectively, although the total for all versions of IE is 52.93 percent while all versions of Firefox add up to 31.4 percent. The latest versions of the top two browsers, IE8 and FF3.5 own 12.98 and 6.56 percent respectively.

Chrome and Safari are neck and neck at 3.11 percent apiece, while Opera 9.6 is barely troubling the scorers at 1.18 percent market share, although the shiny new version 10.0 is out today.

Check out the W3C numbers here.
