Cheap Power Adapter for Asus Eee PC

Mindful Musings has a terrific find on an inexpensive power adapter for the Asus Eee PC, which uses a rather uncommon 9.5V 2.5A draw that is not supported by most universal adapters.

The power adapter, shown above, is available at AllElectronics.com (model number PS-930) for USD9.85 plus shipping. It is a 9V adapter wth a 3A draw and it performs wonderfully with the Asus Eee PC.

Check out the post at Mindful Musings including the link to purchase the charger.

ASUS Eee PC desktop spotted?

Referencing Electronista's article "ASUS Eee PC desktop spotted?" reader steve sent in his thoughts on the upcoming model -

"Could this be the Eee PC desktop?

I'm in two minds about this venture. If it does look this good it could easily have the same impact on the desktop market as the Eee PC 701 has had on the mini notebook market.

On the other hand though, I think people are more likely to accept that portables have less grunt. I'm not so sure how many people would accept a desktop with low performance and low storage capacity. It is possible to buy other desktops at around the $500 mark that have more powerful CPU's and 80GB+ HDD's... but do they look as slim and sexy as the E-DT?

But maybe it would be perfect as a kitchen PC for light duty, web browsing and email. A companion to the PC in the study that does all the grunt work.

I'm so confused.

Good luck ASUS. You could win over millions of buyers by simply confusing them into thinking they need a E-DT."

Win XP Asus Eee PC 4G at Best Buy for $399 In April

Submitted by Brad Linder -

It looks like Asus will begin selling Eee PC units preloaded with Windows XP in the US in a few weeks, for the same price it currently charges for Linux models. This makes a bit of sense, since the Eee PC 900 series which will come out in May or June will sell for a few bucks more and will come in Windows or Linux varieties and ship with more RAM and storage.

Laptop Mag has the details here.

Brad has also written about this in his Eeesite.

Thanks, Brad.

Why Small is Beautiful

Glyn Moody of Digital Life essays the affect of the Asus Eee PC and other low-cost ultra-portables on the fortunes of Microsoft in the article Why Small is Beautiful.

As he noted, until the Asus Eee PC burst into the picture, Linux was perceived as being too complicated to ever become mainstream. The Eee PC's Easy Mode revised that perception, and with the product's success, enabled Linux to gain market acceptance with the average user - a very significant breakthrough given Linux's lack of retail history.

Asus expects to sell 3.8 million units this year alone. That's 3.8 million reasons to force Microsoft to buddy up to Asus and encourage it to bundle Windows XP as well. But because Windows XP requires considerable more computing power, Asus had to beef up the models that will be bundled with the Microsoft OS. Consequently, the Windows-based models will generally cost 30% more than comparable Linux-based models. The disparity will increase more if Microsoft replaces XP with Vista as originally planned.

What is even more worrisome for Microsoft is that several companies have introduced products intended to compete with the Asus Eee PC - all using the same production model, specifically the choice of Linux as the bundled OS. As a Sony executive put it, it is a race to the bottom, referring to the downward trend in price.

And that downward trend in hardware price invariably means a downward trend in software price. The pressure is even greater in developing countries, where the low-cost ultra-portables have huge appeal, so much so that Microsoft has started to sell Windows for about USD3 as a means to discourage sales of pirated copies. Obviously Microsoft's profit margin is taking a huge cut, and this could eventually affect how it conducts its business, including plans for buying out other companies.

But the more lasting effect is that if the low-cost ultra-portables succeed in establishing Linux as a mainstream OS alternative, Microsoft will find itself competing with open source software that are essentially free. That indeed, is something to think about - especially for Microsoft.

Asus Eee PC versus the CloudBook

PC Advisor pitted the Asus Eee PC against the Everex Cloudbook in a head-to-head in-depth comparison. It gave the Cloudbook the edge in design, but awarded the Eee PC the upper hand in weight, video quality, processor, touchpad, battery/fan, wifi, upgradeability, external ports, and BIOS/OS. It called it even in keyboard, storage, applications, and tech support.

However instead of declaring the Asus Eee PC the outright winner, PC Advisor recommended readers to wait a few months for the Asus Eee PC 900, the ECS G10IL or Everex's own updated CloudBook. All will sport larger 9" LCDs, will reportedly cost between £250 to £500 (around USD500 - USD1000). The current models' starting price point is about £200 (around USD400).

As the reviewer reasoned, "most consumers will ultimately be much happier spending a teensy bit more money for a slightly bigger machine."

Admittedly, USD500 is, relatively speaking, a tad above USD400. But USD1000 is nowhere "a teensy bit more money" than USD400.

Personally, I feel the market of the original Asus Eee PC 701 is quite different from the target market of the newer, and more expensive, models. In short, Asus is going off the original vision.

Super Talent Announces "World's Thinnest" 256GB SSD

According to Gearlog, San Jose, CA-based Super Talent has announced what they claim to be the "world's slimmest" 256GB solid state drive (SSD). At 12.5mm, the FSD56GC25H is 40% thinner than its nearest rival.

The company is also touting the drive's ruggedness which supports up to 1600 G-shocks and 16G vibrations. No pricing was available.

More product details are available at Super Talent's website.

Fire Factory to Cause Battery Shortage

According to Yahoo! News, a March 3 fire at LG Chem's Ochang factory has contributed to a shortage of laptop batteries, especially for Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Asus. In fact, the fire at LG Chem, S. Korea's 2nd largest battery maker, could conceivably affect up to 40% of 2nd quarter shipments at Asus. Dell, on the other hand, expects minimal impact.

LG Chem said it expected the Ochang plant to start production again in two to three months.

Asus launches Eee PC SDK

Submitted by Brad Linder -

Asus has released an SDK for the Eee PC. It comes in the form of a 1.2GB disc image for installing Xandros and some developer tools in a virtual machine or on a hard drive partition. There's also extensive documentation with instructions for writing applications for the tiny laptop's custom Linux UI.

More details , including download info, are available at Eeesite.

Next ASUS Eee PC to use touchscreen after all?

According to Electronista, the next iteration of the ASUS Eee PC will have a touchscreen, as disclosed by Taiwan screen manufacturers. The rumor is that Asus has ordered low-cost, resistive touchscreens that will be for the units to be launched in April. Resistive touchscreens are considered less elegant than capacitive touchscreens (e.g. Apple iPhone's) but will add just USD10 in production cost.

The question is whether overall additional production cost will really only be USD10. If so that would suggest the model retaining its original form factor and not morph into a tablet. A touchscreen in the original form factor would not exactly be convenient to use. Still, having witnessed Asus' inconsistency with the Asus Eee PC product line, anything is possible. :)

More photos of Intel’s Netbook, rumors being dismissed

According gadgetell, the Intel is ready to launch the Netbook (aka Eco PC) which will have either a 7" or 9" LCD, a 900MHz Celeron, and 512MB RAM.

It will also have the carry handle of the Classmate PC line but will come with a bigger hard drive, expected to be at least 40GB.

The Netbook will most probably sell at a little more than USD300.

More photos and details are available here.

Asus Eee PC - The Computer for Computer (Il)literate Parents?

"Are Your Parents Computer Literate?" is an interesting post on the Gadgenista blog. The blogger, Lia Amanda Espina, gave her mom an Asus Eee PC for her 60th birthday gift and wondered if her mom will be able to really utilize the notebook.

Considering that her mom is presumably computer illiterate and advanced in age, the fact that she and her siblings decided to give her an Eee PC is testimony to both its low-price and user-friendliness. And it serves as a very good example of Asus' original intended target of the 2nd billion - potential users who have never bought a PC either because of price or software complexity. After all, it is doubtful if Lia and her siblings would even have considered another computer (bigger size, higher price, more complicated interface).

That point made, here's hoping Asus will continue to focus on targeting this specific market and therefore provide the rest of us as well with cost-effective, very functional Eee PCs instead of bringing out more expensive, larger, and heavier models.

At any rate, here is hoping Lia will do a follow-up on that story. As she puts, "hopefully after a week or so my mom would already know how to surf the internet by herself, send email and watch YouTube. She’d be hanging at coffee shops, sipping latte and surfing on her spanking, brand new white ASUS EEE PC!"

If and when her mom actually does those things, that would yet be the best testimony to Asus' Easy to Learn, Easy to Work, Easy to Play tagline.

EEEndiana bag project

A cool bag project by Eeeuser member macan74, as posted in this thread.

Philippine Telcos Bundle Asus Eee PCs

As first reported in the Philippine Telco to bundle Eee PC with DSL post back in January 21, Philippine telcos Globe Telecom and Smart Communications are now bundling the Asus Eee PC with their services to attract new subscribers.

Per Buddy Blogs, Globe is offering a 384kpbs max broadband service + Asus Eee PC bundle at PhP1495 (roughly USD36) monthly (credit card payment) or PhP1620 (roughly USD39) monthly (cash) with a 24-month lock-in period.

The Asus Eee PC bundled model is a 2G Surf, which retails for about PhP16,000 (roughly USD385.54). Comparable unbundled DSL services runs about PhP900 monthly. So the extra 24 months x PhP595 = PhP14,280 (assuming credit card payment) is for the 2G Surf.

The offer was initially launched in the southern provinces of Cebu and Davao but is now also available in the capital region of Manila.

Rival Smart Communications also started advertising a bundle yesterday consisting of the Asus Eee PC 2G Surf + VGA cellphone promo. For PhP1800 monthly you get the Eee PC only. For PhP2,500 you get the Eee PC plus either a Nokia 2630 (VGA cam, FM radio) or the LG KU380 (1.3mpx cam).

New Asus Eee PC 4G 701s with just 4400mAh battery?

A couple of EeePH members have discovered that some of the new 4G 701s now come with the 4400mAh batteries instead of the original 5200mAh citing units they saw both in Bangkok and in the Philippines. Some other members reported getting units with 4800mAh labeled batteries.

If you want to check your battery's rating, as member dix-neuf suggested, you can do so with the following command (in Xandros): /home/user> sudo cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info. The tip is from Blogeee.

NorhTec prepping sub-$300 Linux-based laptop

Aiming to arrive just a hair below that magical $300 price point, NorhTec is reportedly gearing up to introduce its Gecko laptop to the world, but the machine itself will be designed / built by Quanta. Study: Laptop heat a threat to fertility

According ZDNet State University of New York study suggests heat generated from laptops can significantly elevate the temperature of the scrotum, potentially putting sperm count at risk. It thus creates a dilemma for the growing segment of the working world that relies on laptops - whether to be productive at work or in the bedroom.

The study found that using a laptop in a sitting position with the laptop balanced on the lap can raise scrotum temperature by as much as 2.8 degrees Celsius.

Asus predicts Windows Eee PC will outsell Linux version

From Computerworld -

Asus is predicting Windows Eee PCs will outsell the original Xandros version by a ratio of 6 to 4 by the end of this year. At a projected sales of 5 million unit for the year, this would mean Asus is expected to ship some 3 million Windows-based units. It would also mean increased revenues as the Windows version costs almost twice as much over the cheapest Linux model.

Complete article can be read here.

----------

Asus' latest projection, coupled with the announcements of the new Eee PC models costing more than USD500, might be an indication the company is losing its original focus of targeting the so-called 2nd billion users. Asus might gain additional revenue with the higher priced Windows model but it does so at the expense of diluting the Eee PC brand in the low-cost ultraportable market segment that it created in the first place. Simply put, Asus is opening the doors wide for the competition to dethrone the Eee PC in said market segment.

For more on this, read Why Windows-based Asus Eee PCs are a Mistake.

Asus EP20: First look at the Eee PC desktop

Submitted by Brad Linder -

Asus showed off the EP20 at CeBIT. A few months ago Asus announced plans to expand its Eee brand to include desktops, and this appears to be the first in that lineup, judging by the OS you can see on the screen behind the computer. My favorite part of the picture, the EP20 is described as having "good enough" performance."

Everex CloudBook Review

Notebookreview has a very revealing review of the Everex Cloudbook. Suffice to say, it exposes the various sacrifices the Everex/VIA tandem has to make to bring the subnoteook to the market at its low price of USD399.

The review concludes..."The low-capacity slow hard drive, and slow overall performance make the CloudBook a less than compelling purchase compared to the current generation Asus Eee PC 4G ... despite the much smaller storage space. The fact that the CloudBook cannot support the correct resolutions for widescreen external monitors is another problem for anyone who wants to connect this laptop to a larger screen. The issue of excessive heat build up inside the CloudBook is perhaps the most obvious "deal killer." Who wants to own a laptop that you can only use for 30-45 minutes when connected to the internet before you have to turn it off and let it cool down?"

ECS launches Asus Eee PC challenger

From Pocket-Line.co.uk -

The Asus Eee PC could have a new challenger in the guise of the ECS G10IL, a USD500 subnote that comes with a HSDPA 7.2 datacard built-in. While details are still sketchy, it does come with a webcam, 3 USB 2.0 ports, 1 Ethernet port, and a 56Kbps modem.

Asus Eee PC to Get Intel Diamondville, Hard Drives

Per Laptop's hour long interview with Asus CEO Jerry Shen, plans for the Asus Eee PC include -

* A 8.9" display and Windows XP: The Eee PC 900 will have a 8.9-inch 1024 x600 screen resolution and will be available in April. There will be an 8GB SSD Windows XP mdeol and a 12GB/20GB SSD Xandros model.

* Hard Drives: Asus is considering offering regular hard drives in the future.

* Intel’s Diamondville will adopted in Q2.

* In May or June, Asus will release “very stylish” versions of the Eee PC.

For the full interview, visit the Laptop site here.

----------

Regular Hard Drives? What is Asus thinking of again? It is as if they'd rather the Eee PC conform to the competition than to make it further stand out. Quite disappointing, to say the least.

Also Shen is quoted in the interview the initial price for the new model will be $499 but the market will likely force them to drop the price down by June. So I guess he is telling us not to by in April but in June???

GeCube Genie PC: ready to compete with the PC Eee

From Gizmodo -

With a 7" 800 x 480 screen, 2GB flash storage, Linux OS, a 950 gram weight and a familiar form factor, the GeCube looks like an Asus Eee PC clone. Admittedly there are enough difference - a Windows button and a trackpad instead of a touchpad. But as the above photos show, the most notable difference is that its screen can actually be detached from the keyboard.

Price is expected to be less than 300 euros for the base model.

New Asus Eee PC could have faster processor

According to TechRadar, an Asus employee told them the second generation Asus Eee PC, due for release in June, might yet come with an upgraded, faster processor. The unit behind demo'd at Cebit has a 9" LCD and a maximum storage of 12GB but still uses the Celeron M processor. However the CPU could still change. In addition, Asus was reportedly still having a play with the Bluetooth components.

New mini-laptops challenge Eee PC

Aside from the Asus Eee PC 900, several low-cost mini-laptops were announced at the Cebit08. Personal Computer World UK provides a run-down of the latest Eee PC competitors -

Gecube Junior, at $229 (£115 excl Vat), uses a 7" 800x480 display, a 2GB SSD and a completely detachable keyboard. It has a five-hour battery life, uses an unspecified v86 processor and weighs 0.94kg including keyboard and a carrybag. It looks almost identical to Elonex's £99 notebook.

Gecube Senior Genie PC has a 10.2" 800x600 screen, comes with a 1GHz C7 processor, 60GB mechanical hard disk and Windows drivers and costs about $279 (£140 excl Vat).

The E-Lead Noahpad has a 7" 800x480 display. Its range of ports, wireless networking and styling is similar to the Eee PC, with the exception of a 1GHz Via C7 processor, a 30GB hard disk, a fully rotatable screen and a keyboard split into two rigid, touch-sensitive panels. The device will go on sale in April for about $600 (£302 excl Vat).

Medion showed an early prototype of its 10"Linux-based notebook behind closed doors. It has a similar resolution to the 8.9in Eee. Its chassis has a matt-white outer clam-shell design with a black keyboard.

Dixons' rebadged Packard Bell’s 7in notebook has a 1.2GHz Via C7 CPU, 1GB Ram and a 30GB hard disk and will cost €599 (approx £450).

Clevo released a 7" 1,024x600 touch-panel LCD laptop with Intel’s Atom processors running at 1.33GHz, 1.6Ghz or 1.86GHz. The laptop will go on sale in June and weighs 990g. Its other features look identical to the Asus Eee PC but it has enough processing power to attain the Vista Premium Logo.

Amoi showed off a notebook with a 10.2in 800x480 screen and a full sized 25.5cm wide keyboard. It will go on sale this summer for a similar price to the 8.9in Eee PC.

More details and photos of the mini-laptops are available here.

Asus Eee PC 900 hands on

More Asus Eee PC 900 details

Additional details of the Asus Eee 900 have been reported by ZDNet UK -

The Asus Eee 900 will feature an 8.9" 1024 x 600 screen, 1GB RAM, maximum SSD storage of 12GB, and a 1.3MB webcam. These enhancements however will mean a slight reduction in battery life and a substantial increase in the price.

Other changes include the moving of the speakers from their current position straddling the screen to the underside of the unit. Options will include Bluetooth, WiMax modules, and Windows XP.

The Linux model will cost €399 or about an increase of roughly a third over the price of the original 701 model. The Windows version will be more expensive.

And according to the same ZDNET UK article, the Eee PC 900 will be available in Asia this month, and in Europe in April. Also of note was Asus' announcement of a partnership with T-Mobile Germany, which will see the operator distribute Eee PCs with bundled Wi-Fi minutes or HSDPA dongles.

Asus claims it will sell between three and five million Eee PCs this year and that recent stock supply problems will "be getting better" in the second quarter of this year.

ASUS Shows Off 8.9" Eee PC 900

From DailyTech -
