OLPC begins laptop mass production

Per the Mass High Tech site -

One Laptop per Child Foundation has begun mass production of its XO laptop Nov 5 at Quanta Computer Inc.'s new manufacturing facility in Changshu, China. The first XOs are expected to become available sometime this month and are expected to withstand heavy rains in the rainforest, the heat of the desert and a 5-foot fall.

The XO also features a screen that is easy to read in sunlight and the ability to operate without access to electricity. A 12-hour battery charged with solar power and a long-range wifi antenna. It is designed to operate using less than 1 watt of power.

Originally intended to cost $100 per laptop, the latest estimated price is closer to $200 but the OLPC foundation is still hoping large-scale production cost savings would bring the original price.
