ASUS to offer Eee PC Branded Hard Drive, Optical Drive, and 3G Card

According to Laptop Mag, Asus appears set to offer a set of new USB-based Eee PC branded accessories, including an external hard drive, an optical drive and a 3G connection card called T500.

While Asus has been perceived as unnecessarily diluting the Eee PC brand by coming out with TVs and other products, as well as confusing the consumer with countless overlapping Asus Eee PC model variants, these accessories are just right.

USB Greenhouse: Love It or Leave It?

Plug it in and plant your seeds — it comes with marigold seeds, but you can sub in your favorite flower or other plant too — and the Greenhouse nurtures your little baby buds. It comes with artificial soil, a light, and a tray, and it will even tell you when it needs to be watered.

Asus Eee Crystal Case Actually Made of Plastic (But Still Good)

Asus has announced a new smorgasboard of Eee PC accessories, including the following -

Ai Guru U1 VoIP USB phone.

Eee AP, a 802.11g wireless access point.

USB "3.5G HSDPA Card" is just as straightforward, with GSM900 / 1800 / 1900 and WCDMA2100 / 1900 / 850, and download speeds up to 3.6Mbps.

Slim DVD-RW drive.

There are also generic headsets. There's no word yet on price or availability.

Accessories Start Plugging Into Asus Eee PC

PC World has provided a list of accessories available for the Asus Eee PC -

A 6-cell battery, headsets, and mice from Asus though price and release dates have not been confirmed, an accessory pack (travel adapter, a car power charger, a screen protector and a black leather case) from Expansys USA which will start shipping March 19, a Continental Power Adapter from Incipio, and various mounts and bags.

1. Use a personal organizer of adequate size.




2. Remove all papers and the ring binder. Cover any sharp or rough surfaces by black glue-tape. Join your Asus Eee PC and the personal organizer together with two-side glue tape.

Must-have Accessories for Asus Eee PC

Dmitri Popov is compiling a list of must-have accessories for the Asus Eee PC at his site Tumbling Writer. Among those listed are:




Buffalo MiniStation TurboUSB Excellent shock resistant and fast hard drives. Available in 80-320GB capacities.




Corsair Voyager Water-proof and shock resistant USB sticks.




Trust Ultra Small Bluetooth 2 USB Adapter. It's not only small, but exceptionally cheap too.

Spectec's Mini-SD GPS Unit

Spectec, a manufacturer of all sorts of SD-based accessories, demo'd a MiniSD Bluetooth GPS unit at CES. Unfortunately, the company is primarily targeting Windows Mobile users, so a Linux driver might not be available. Also, it takes up the SD slot as well.

Still some users might find the GPS functionality useful and it is always good to know that such a product exists, albeit not in an ideal package.

Asus Taiwan e-Store Sells Eee PC Batteries

Asus' Chinese-language e-store now carries the Asus Eee PC's battery, as shown in the screen shot below -




Per the site, apparently the Eee PC shares the same battery with Asus' customizable/upgradeable whitebook model, the C90, which was released earlier. Since we all know most of the Eee PC's parts are off-the-shelf, it would be interesting to list down all the Eee PC's components and see what it shares with other Asus models, or for that matter, other models from other brands. :)
