Sony launches $2,000 VAIO P

Sony has launched its "Signature Collection" - a series of jazzed up models wrapped in designer skins, including colored fake croc skins. Included in the collection is a limited run (1,000) of the VAIO P (P699E/Q). The $1,999 model comes with a 1.86GHz CPU and a 256GB SSD.

Sony Vaio P to come with built-in WiMAX

Sony Japan and UQ Communications are currently working on the Vaio P mini notebook outfitted with WiMAX. Unfortunately the UQ WiMAX service will be deployed in Japan only. The Japanese Vaio P versions seems to always have continue faster processors, more color options, Windows XP, custom configurations, and now WiMax.

Sony VAIO P - HSDPA mod

tnkgrl has done it again! This time, she has managed to switch the Sony VAIO P WWAN radio from EVDO-only with Verizon to unlocked HSDPA/EDGE by hacking some software and soldering a $1 part!

Sony VAIO P begins shipping in the US

Engadget has reported that the Sony VAIO P, which was officially announced to start shipping in February, has actually started shipping. Well, at least one unit as shown by the shipping confirmation.

Sony: Why the VAIO P is not a netbook

The Connect with Sony Community blog has listed down why the VAIO P is not a netbook -

The keyboard: Sony claims the keyboard is much closer to a notebook size keyboard than what you see on most netbooks.

The backlit screen: It features a 1600 x 768 resolution - no need for side-to-side scrolling.

The core: It has an Atom Z processor unlike the N series found in most netbooks.

The wireless capabilities: It has WiFi, Bluetooth, and mobile broadband (via Verizon Wireless).

GPS: It has it; netbooks don't.

Dual OS: It has Windows Vista and an instant-mode option that launches directly into Sony’s Xross Media Bar interface.

The options: It comes in three configurations, including a traditional hard drive model and two SSD versions with 64GB and 128GB, respectively.


So there, the VAIO P is not a netbook.

Form factor looks weird in pics, but it does work incredibly well - a Porsche among Chevy-esque standard netbook. In fact, Sony insists it's not a netbook.

The keys are small, but just right. The trackball is a little oversensitive, but adjustable. But the mouse buttons are too small. Instant-on OS. Essentially a Sony XMB but exceptionally classy. CPU is 1.33Ghz Atom Z, 2GB RAM, which run Vista okay. Built-in 3G is Verizon only.

$900 gets you the Vista Home Basic model. There are 3 other SKUS, mainly varying in storage - 60GB up to a 128GB SSD in the $1500 model.

Sony's VAIO P ultraportable revealed

The Sony VAIO P ultraportable is on display at CES. Unfortunately it appears to have a chicklet keyboard as well as a tiny pointing nub. Ugh!
