NVIDIA tablet mystery solved: an ODM Tegra prototype

NVIDIA's Jen-Hsun Huang was pictured with yesterday with what appears to be a Tegra prototype from an ODM called ICD. While there is still no official confirmation on specs, rumors are it is running Windows CE with a resistive touchscreen. Planned upgrades include Android, capacitive screen, and multiple screen sizes. Planned launch is March 2010.

Nvidia Working on Chrome OS Tegra Devices

Per JK on the Run Nvidia has confirmed it is working closely with Google on putting the Chrome OS on Tegra devices. According to Nvidia's guy, they are using a two-pronged approach: Windows Mobile and Google Android support in smartphones; Windows CE and Google Chrome OS in smartbooks or netbooks.

The Nvidia Tegra platform is basically envisioned to provide more processing power to portable devices especially high-def media playback while consuming less battery power. With the right OS and hardware design, Tegra thus can potentially become a powerful player in the portable scene.

Lenovo, Acer to launch Tegra smartbooks with Google's Chrome OS

Both Lenovo and Acer will probably launch Tegra-based smartbooks running Google's Chrome OS later this month. Nvidia's Tegra itself is due to make an appearance sometime soon and appears to have a won over Microsoft's Zune as well.

Given that mainland manufacturers have been using ARM processors for years in mobile phones and appear not to have any loyalty or affinity for a specific platform or OS, if the initial units sell well, we can expect a myriad of designs and colors by mid-2010.
