HP Compaq's $300 laptop reviewed, makes strong case to bypass netbook

The HP Compaq Presario CQ60 is actually a plain-vanilla unremarkable model - except for one thing - its remarkable price. At a price tag of $300, as sold by Walmart, it is in netbook price range and is practically half the price of comparable notebooks. And per a Computer Shopper hands-on review, while over-all performance is so-so, it even seems to outperform some Intel Atom-based machines.

The trade-off vis-a-vis netbooks is you get a 15.6" screen and a DVD-burner but in a heavier and bigger form factor. It will definitely be an attractive proposition for some users.

Walmart offers $298 laptop

Starting Sunday Walmart will begin selling an exclusive Compaq Presario notebook it had developed in partnership with Hewlett-Packard for $298, or nearly half the price of comparable units. Specs include 3GB RAM, 160GB HD and Windows Vista.

Walmart's move could spell trouble for some notebook makers as they might end up incurring losses on each unit sold just to stay in the competition.

Additional details,including photo above, from TFTS indicate the model number to be Compaq Presario CQ60-419WM. It features a 2.1GHz AMD Sempron processor, 15.6" display (1366 x 768 resolution), an NVIDIA GeForce 8200M graphics card, a standard six-cell battery, Wi-Fi connectivity. and a dual DVD player in addition to those mentioned above.

Asus Eee PCs expected in Walmart by year's end

Asus will make its Eee PCs available in Walmart by year's end in the hope of regaining its dominance, which was wrested by Acer's Aspire One. While Asus Eee PCs have been available at Target and Best Buy, the Aspire One early on was offered by Walmart. Its availability at the biggest chain no doubt helped boosted overall sales, a fact Asus is probably painfully aware of.

Pink Acer Aspire One Netbook is current Bestseller on Walmart

Appropriately enough for Valentine's Day, Walmart's current bestselling product is the Pink Acer Aspire One selling for $298. Specs include 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 3-cell lithium ion, Webcam, 8.9 inch display and runs Windows XP. It originally went on sale last October at $358.

Another Eee PC 901 price drop: Now just $448 from Walmart

Yesterday Amazon and other retailers listed the Eee PC 901 for $499, or about $100 or so off the original list price. Now Walmart has one-upped Amazon by cutting the price to $448:
