Samsung NC10 second PCI-e slot hack

graemem of The Samsung Netbook Community forum hacked his NC10 to add a second PCI-e slot for a Broadcom HD decoder card for 1080p HD playback. Since the mainboard already had the holes and wiring for a second PCI-e port, it was pretty much a straightforward process. graemem however had to deal with potential issues such as the BIOS not recognizing a second PCI-e device but in the end everything worked as Graeme hoped.

Samsung NC10 being offered by UK carriers

UK carriers are offering aggressively priced bundles for the Samsung NC10. Vodafone takes the lead with its free deal for a £25 ($40) monthly plan with a lock-in period of two years, or a total contract cost of £600 ($972) or slight twice the retail price of the NC10. The other carriers such as O2 and Three, offer somewhat similar deals -
£30 ($48) monthly. Three's offer is only an 18-month commitment which actually makes it cheaper overall.

Moblin finds a home with the Samsung NC10

The folks at Laptop Magazine has Moblin running on a Samsung NC10. The results are pretty impressive. Inspite booting off a USB drive, it was fast. In addition, WiFi, ethernet, the mouse and trackpad all worked smoothly.

Samsung NC10 Review

Laptop Mag has a review of the Samsung NC10, imported from Korea and running Korean Windows XP with a Korean keyboard. Highlights of the review -

Pros
Roomy keyboard
Very long battery life
Speedy and relatively large hard drive
Good speakers for a netbook
Quality webcam

Cons
Small touchpad
Design not as chic as some competitors

The verdict? The Samsung NC10 is the only product that provides more bang for the buck as compared to market leader MSI Wind U100. It has a comfortable keyboard, fast and large hard drive and more than 6 hours of battery life and at $499, it costs $50 less than the $549 MSI Wind. The only downside is a smaller touchpad.

Samsung NC10 netbook on sale in US for $480

U.S-based retailer PC Nation has listed the Samsung NC10 netbook at USD480.56 as shown in screenshot above. Note though backorder status and shipping of 1-2 weeks.

Samsung launches 10.2" NC10 netbook

Samsung has launched its NC10, a "small, light and incredibly functional, the netbook NC10 is a stylish alternative to existing products in the space." The NC10 has a 10" 1024 z 600 WSVGA LED, 1.33kg, 8 hr 6 cell battery, Atom CPU, Win XP Home, 80GB/160GB hard drive, 802.11b/g, 10/100 Ethernet, webcam, 3-in-1 multi-memory card reader, a VGA connection, mic in, headphone out and three USB ports. Bluetooth 2.0+EDR is optional.

It will be available in white, piano black and metallic blue. Release date is October 2008 with a selling price quoted as "up to" £329 excluding VAT.

Samsung Netbook official photos...

What Laptop has posted a couple of photos of the still unnamed Samsung Netbook. The photos were released by Samsung UK preparatory to an end of October launch. Based on the photos, the unit has a 10.2" screen, the power button is positioned on the side, along with VGA-out, audio and a USB port. The other side sports Ethernet, power input and two more USB ports. Other details leaked include three colors (White, Black, Blue), Intel Atom N270, 1GB RAM, hard drive, a 6-cell 5 hour battery, Windows XP. Price should be around £330 (inc VAT).
