Instead of clicking the touchpad bar, you can instead quickly double tap the touchpad to confirm your selection. E.g. You can move the cursor to highlight an application icon and double tap the touchpad to run the app.
For this trick to work, your touchpad obviously has to be enabled. Also tapping has to be enabled.
To enable your touchpad, go to Settings -> Touchpad -> General. Make sure your Enable Tapping is checked.
To enable Tapping, go to Settings -> Touchpad -> Tapping. Make sure Tapping is checked. You can also set the allowable interval between double taps.

Middle-Clicking on the Asus Eee PC
jangelo of My Asus Eee PC blog has discovered that by clicking both the left and right buttons of the touchpad you can simulate a middle-click even if the Asus Eee PC's touchpad has a one piece bar. You just have to click as far away as from the center as possible. But you also need to be careful and not click too hard as this might break the bar.
Middle-click is especially useful in Firefox for performing one-click tab closures and for copying and pasting across windows, especially when using the Linux terminal/console.
Update: I tried performing the middle click but was only successful once. Maybe there is an art to mastering it. :(
