For our German-speaking readers, check out UMPCtalk. It is a nicely laid-out site full of interesting tidbits. For those who don't understand German like me, use Google translate. It is worth the little extra effort. :)

Asus confirms 10" 8G Eee PC

Submitted by reader jon bradford -

From Engadget -

According to German site German derStandard Asus spokesman Holger Schmidt has announced that an 8GB Eee PC with a 10" screen would ship in 2008, together with the equally-rumored but far less sexy desktop Eee.

Original German site can be read here.

----------

The next questions would be what is the price and what is the size?

As for the size, one of the Engadget readers posted this comment -

moregadgets @ Nov 14th 2007 12:15PM

"I don't believe the 10" model will be the same size as the 7" model. The screen won't simply replace the 7" screen and the speakers to the sides. I would expect the 10" model to be slightly larger."

From TFA: "Das Gehäuse bleibt dabei gleich groß wie beim 4G-Modell", meint der Asus-Sprecher, der Platz hierfür reiche problemlos aus.

Translation: "The enclosure remains at the same size as the 4G model", according to the Asus spokesperson, as there is more than enough space.

- End of Comment.

If true, then the 10" will be a very attractive model, assuming of course the price is reasonable. But I wonder where the speakers would go?

Another interesting comment from the Engadget thread -

Ian @ Nov 14th 2007 6:30PM

A neat policy for the eee PC would IMHO be as follows.

Keep the same dimension of the package and in about 9 months, when LCD prices have fallen, introduce a replaceable larger screen which retrofits the todays eee and also becomes a new model.

This would keep production costs LOW and allow existing users to upgrade ad nausea. I think there are 2 types of buyers for the eee. Those who will use it "as is" for 2-3 years. Those who will rip it apart and upgrade everything in sight as almost a cult.

- End of Comment.

Personally I think Ian hit it spot on. There is just something about the Asus Eee PC that makes it so much appealing to techies, geeks, and gadget freaks. Yet it is elegant enough and simple enough to use to become an iconic product in the same mold as the iPod. Hopefully Asus will follow through on its initial efforts.

By the way, thanks jon for the info to the link.

Another German site on the Asus Eee PC

Submitted by reader Jan Detlefsen -

Another interesting German site on Asus Eee PC and related topics - Tonsai Media.

Looks like the Asus Eee PC has a universal appeal. I would venture to say, almost iconic. Too bad, we will have to wait a bit longer. Again.

German Asus Eee PC Site

I just came across a German site focusing on the Asus Eee PC - Eee-PC.de. With the French site Blogeee and the Spanish site Hispazone both featuring the Asus subnote as well, it appears the product has a very strong European following as well.
