AT&T to Subsidize 10.1" Acer Aspire Ones Through Costco

From The Boy Genius Report -
Based on training materials for Costco employees, it appears AT&T will be offering the 10.1" Acer Aspire One bundled with integrated 3G access via the membership chain store starting May 11. No word yet on pricing but it should just be a bit higher than the 8.9″ model currently available from Radio Shack.

Acer's AT&T 3G-infused Aspire One now at $79

From Engadget -
In a preemptive move against soon-to-be-available Verizon's subsidized HP Mini 1000, AT&T has reduced its 3G-equipped Aspire One bundle down from $99.99 to $79.99, available at Radio Shack. Note though you'll be stuck in a two year data contract with AT&T. Has the price war started?

8.9" Acer Aspire One has HD flaw, distaste for U2?

From Engadget -
Based on a Hardware Cult forum thread, 8.9" Aspire One owners are discovering that, believe it or not, their hard drives get trashed when they play music full blast through the AAO's speakers. As weird as it sounds, the problem affects only standard hard drives, not SSDs, and it occurs whenever the right speaker causes enough vibration and / or magnetic interference to cause the drive to malfunction. Interestingly, the problem was first discovered by someone played U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" at max volume. The problem has since been consistently reproduced by playing that particular song.
You can read the Hardware Cult thread here.

First 10.1" Acer Aspire One Batch has 8 hour battery

From Laptop -
According to Acer, the first batch of its 10.1" Aspire Ones inadvertently shipped with a 5800-mAh six-cell battery, which means about 8 hours of runtime including continuous WiFi, instead of a 4400-mAh battery (less than 5.5 hours runtime).
Despite the error, Acer has no plans to raise prices. So if you are planning to get a 10.1" Aspire One, you might as well try to get your hands on one of these. Acer has not released the actual number of units shipped with the larger-capacity battery, so the opportunity will last only until the current inventories last.
To tell if your unit has the larger-capacity battery, pop the battery off the back and check the label for "5800 mAh."

Windows 7 on Acer Aspire One

From Electronic Pulp has posted a guide for installing the beta Windows 7 on the 8.9" Acer Aspire One 8GB SSD model.
While it is not a straight procedure - you need to shrink the install files - it is still fairly straightforward and easy to follow.

Acer to phase out 8.9" Aspire one in Q2

From Eee PC Blog -
With the forthcoming launch of its 10.1" Aspire 103, Acer considering phasing out its 8.9" series later this year. In addition, according to trade sources, Acer OEM Quanta is due to receive an order for a 10.1" enterprise netbook. As another Acer OEM, Compal, has just bagged the initial contract for the Aspire 103, the Quanta version may likely be another model instead of production ramp-up. Just what are its additional (enterprise) features is anybody's guess at this time.

Acer Aspire One 10.1"

macles* has the details of the 10" Acer Aspire One, due for release next month. -
Features are mostly identical to the existing model except for some changes. One, it will likely be Win XP and HDD only, no Linux or SSD. The Storage Expansion slot has been replaced by a multicard reader. There is only a single DIMM slot now, with a maximum capacity of 2GB. The 10.1" screen will still have the same resolution. 3G and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR are optional. The area around the keyboard has a brushed metal finish and the seamlessly integrated touchpad resembles a more traditional touchpad. The new AA1 will be available in white, black and red.

Solution for Acer Aspire One Slooooow SSD
If you are like many other Acer Aspire One owners who are exasperated with the ever so slow SSD, do yourself and check out this Aspire One User forum thread.
Basically the suggestions are to use the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) in Windows XP or the File-based write filter to tweak the SSD into faster writes.
Complete instructions are in the thread.
Read the Aspire One User forum thread here.

Contract-laden 3G Acer Aspire One hitting US at just $99?

From Engadget -
If the above image turns out to be legit, Radio Shack is set to offer an Acer Aspire One for just $99 so long as you sign up for a minimum $60/month data plan with AT&T. That comes to something north of $1,500 over the life of the contract, which is hardly a steal - but then it is sounds a lot better when compared to the 2-year $35/month sub$200 smartphone bundles being offered.
