New Asus Eee PC could have faster processor

According to TechRadar, an Asus employee told them the second generation Asus Eee PC, due for release in June, might yet come with an upgraded, faster processor. The unit behind demo'd at Cebit has a 9" LCD and a maximum storage of 12GB but still uses the Celeron M processor. However the CPU could still change. In addition, Asus was reportedly still having a play with the Bluetooth components.

Intel Diamondville shuns dual-core

Intel’s upcoming low-cost Diamondville notebook processor will break from Intel’s multi-core strategy and will primarily be a single-core processor.

Small notebooks like the Eee PC will use Diamondville

Intended for use in ultraportables like the Asus Eee PC, the Diamondville features low power and low cost. A single core means less transistors and lower power consumption.

Because of this extreme emphasis on cost, Diamondville will appear in ultra-low-cost notebooks and to a lesser extent–at least initially–in desktops. Intel refers to the low-cost notebook design as “netbook” and estimates the pricing for these devices will go as low as $250. Performance is expected to be commensurate with the Pentium-M.

There will be one exception to the single-core designs: a desktop version of Diamondville will be dual-core. That platform will come with two Diamondville processor models: a dual-core CPU, whose specifics are currently unknown, and the 230, a single-core CPU running at 1.6GHz with a 533-MHz front-side bus and 512KB cache. The Shelton’08 for notebooks will include a single-core Diamondville, the N270.

Upgrading the Asus Eee PC's CPU

Gury Hwa has replaced the Celeron CPU in his Asus Eee PC with a Pentium and has written this up in his blog, GuryHwa1121 -

First, he used mmtool to determine what kind of alternate processor the Eee PC can support. He settle for ULV PM 753 1.2G 2M L2 since it consumes only consumes 0.5 W more TDP than a celeron 353 but is much more powerful.


He then replaced the CPU.


The BIOS automatically recognizes the new CPU.

Rumours of Dothan cpu too hot with Puppy Linux?

...ASUS EEE PC was too hot to run at 900 mhz due to the fact that Puppy was the trial operating system. Puppy has no power management allocations for Dothan cpu. We are now suggesting the use of Microsoft mini operating system supplied in People's Republic of China, which has shadowed bios adjustment module to cool the cpu. In addition Intel has team of ten engineers to work around in smpbus on core voltage and pll frequency, to do power management perhaps to work at the designed 900 mhz frequency?

OLPC had the same problems with battery power conservation, and delays in operating system design. Carlos Slim had intended only to put the first delivery in Mexico libraries, which needs perhaps only AC adaptors, avoiding embarrassing battery problems.

The designs are sometimes best money can buy cheap, or the worst which is cheap enough to build a minimum notebook. OLPC is only sub500 mhz, and EEE is barely running in bios without operating system loads to overheat it...
