BenQ has launched its Joybook Lite U101 netbook with an LED-backlit 16:9 screen. It is now available in Taiwan and China and will soon be offered via telco bundles.

BenQ has launched its 1.1 kg Joybook Lite U101 which has the distinction of being the first netbook to offer a 16:9 display. However its 10.1" screen only has a 1024 x 576 resolution, losing 24 horizontal lines when comapred to a 10.2" 16:10 display. The rest of the specs are pretty much standard: Atom N270 CPU, Intel 945GSE chipset, 1GB of DDR2 memory (512MB for Linux versions), 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, 10/100Mbit Ethernet, 1.3MP webcam, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, a D-sub connector, three USB 2.0 ports and a headphone and mic jack, i80-160GB hard drives or 4-16GB SSD options, and 3 cell battery (4 hours).

It's available now in Taiwan for €398 (US$503/£331) with a 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 3 cell battery and Windows XP Home configuration.

BenQ debuts Joybook Lite U101 netbook

BenQ has now finally entered the low-cost subnotebook market with its new Joybook Lite U101. Features include a 10.1-inch 1,024 x 600 display, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a hard drive of unspecified size, a 3-cell battery, XP or Linux and, a optional 3G. Roll out is expected to be in October (for 8.9") and November (for 10.1").
