HP Mini 1000 users finally got some good news regarding their favorite netbook. HP is now selling the six-cell battery and at the discounted price tag of $95.99 (after a $20 rebate) at that. The battery was originally announced at $153.90.

Per postings on the HP Support Forums, the promised VGA adapter for the Mini 1000 has been impossible to come by and, for now, HP doesn't seem to be getting any more specific than "early 2009" about widespread availability.

In addition some users have been reporting problems with the VGA out for the very similar Mini 2140 netbook, and with a USB-to-VGA adapter used with the Mini 1000. In both cases, the Mini 1000 is unable to automatically detect the external monitor's native resolution, so it outputs a 1024 x 768 resolution all the time.

HP's Mini 1000 offers Qualcomm Gobi WWAN chip as option

According to jkOnTheRun those uncomfortable with choosing a dedicated AT&T or Verizon WWAN module for their HP Mini 100 can opt for the Qualcomm Gobi module which theoretically allows the use of either AT&T or Verizon.

How to get 3G working on the HP Mini 1000

User dplxy over at the Pocketables forum has posted full instructions on how to add 3G to the HP Mini 1000. Basically you need to download and install a WWAN driver from HP, then slot your SIM card into the battery compartment.

Speeds are reported to be solid but it makes the three cell battery drain pretty fast. The downside is the approach may not work with older versions of the Mini 1000.

HP's new Mini 1000 and MIE Linux make netbooks fun again

HP's new Mini 1000 netbook now comes with an 1.6GHz Atom N270 along with other standard specs - 1024x600 10.2" (compared to the 1280x768 on the 2133), 512MB/1GB/2GB RAM configurations (Win XP limit is 1GB), 60GB HDD or 8GB/16GB SSD, SD slot, VGA webcam, 802.11b/g, optional Bluetooth, Ethernet and dual USB plugs. A cheaper model has the smaller 8.9" 1024x600 display.

The XP version is now available starting at $399 for the 8.9" model. A special Vivienne Tam Edition will go for $699 in mid-December, and the Linux MIE version will land in January for a mere $379.
