Notion Ink Tegra Android smartpad uses Pixel Qi display

Notion Ink’s as-yet unnamed Android smartpad is the first confirmed device to use the Pixel Qi transflective display. It is based on an un-anounced NVIDIA Tegra T20 chipset supporting 1080p Full HD video playback, has integrated WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, triband (850/1900/2100) UMTS/HSDPA, a digital compass, accelerometer and proximity, ambient light and water sensors and the 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 Pixel Qi panel.

It measures 6.3 x 9.8 x 0.6 inches, weighs 1.7lbs, includes USB, SD reader, HDMI, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microphone input, and a 3-megapixel autofocus camera with video recording support. Onboard storage is either 16GB or 32GB of SSD.

Pixel Qi displays due in December

Pixel Qi has revealed plans to mass-produce its 3qi displays in December, missing its original Fall target by just a few months. The displays present a major breakthrough as they can operate both like a full color LCD but behave like grayscale e-paper either to save energy or to become readable in bright daylight.

The company also plans to develop a very low-cost TV for parts of the developing world, where ample, regular power is uncommon. The screen would consume less than 10W and could run off of a battery or even a solar panel. Target price is $100.

First look at Pixel Qi’s outdoor readable screens

Pixel Qi has posted photos of the company’s new energy-saving displays capable of displaying in two different modes, a backlit mode with full color saturation, and an ePaper mode that uses less energy. Above photo from Liliputing shows a Pixel Qi screen retrofitted onto an Acer Aspire One running in ePaper Mode.
