ASUS Shows Off 8.9" Eee PC 900

Engadget was able to preview the ASUS's new Eee PC 900 at CeBIT and reported it as having 1GB RAM, 12GB max SSD, a 8.9" 1024 x 600 LCD, and a larger touchpad in a slightly larger and thicker case. Battery lifetime was quoted at 2.5 to 3 hours. The Eee PC 900 12G will be available mid-year at USD600.

Difference between 2G Surf and 4G Models

For those who can't decide which model to buy, below is a list of the differences between the 2G Surf and the 4G -

The 2G Surf does not have the following which the 4G has:

Memory door - entire bottom of unit is a solid piece of plastic.
2nd mini pci
Modem header
Camera socket is empty

Other limitations:

Cannot upgrade memory, RAM chips are directly integrated onto the motherboard.

Other downgrades:

800Mhz Celeron 571Mhz with no cache
4cell 4400 battery

Other Differences:

Slightly different arrangement of power pins near the ethernet switch chip.

Depending on your intended usage, the extra internal space and cheaper price might actually make the Eee PC 2G Surf an attractive buy. :)

Pastel Colors for the Asus Eee PC 4G?

The Asus website has issued a press release January 10 on the availability of the Asus Eee PC in the pastel colors Blush Pink, Lush Green and Sky Blue, aside from the original Pure White and Galaxy Black.



While it did not specifically mentioned which models will be available in the those colors, it would imply Asus meant the 4G, since the Surf models were introduced late last year with those colors. If so, it would mean more choices and probably, a whole lot of difference for some buyers. :)

16GB Asus Eee PC?

According to Akihabara News Asus Japan has announced it will be releasing a 16GB version of the Eee PC in that country. In addition, they will be offering the Windows XP as a pre-install option.

It would be very interesting to see how the Asus Eee PC will fare in Japan given the wide range of tiny portables available over there. For those interested in just what kind of competition is in store for the Eee PC over in Japan you can check out Dynamism's website. Except perhaps I have always been interested in their merchandise. :)

Asus confirms 10" 8G Eee PC

According to German site German derStandard Asus spokesman Holger Schmidt has announced that an 8GB Eee PC with a 10" screen would ship in 2008, together with the equally-rumored but far less sexy desktop Eee.

If true, then the 10" will be a very attractive model, assuming of course the price is reasonable. But I wonder where the speakers would go?

A neat policy for the eee PC would IMHO be as follows.

Keep the same dimension of the package and in about 9 months, when LCD prices have fallen, introduce a replaceable larger screen which retrofits the todays eee and also becomes a new model.

This would keep production costs LOW and allow existing users to upgrade ad nausea. I think there are 2 types of buyers for the eee. Those who will use it "as is" for 2-3 years. Those who will rip it apart and upgrade everything in sight as almost a cult.

Personally I think Ian hit it spot on. There is just something about the Asus Eee PC that makes it so much appealing to techies, geeks, and gadget freaks. Yet it is elegant enough and simple enough to use to become an iconic product in the same mold as the iPod. Hopefully Asus will follow through on its initial efforts.

According to Pocketables the entry-level Asus Eee PC 2G Surf ($299) will not only be available early next year it will be available in various colors as well - Pure White, Lush Green, Sky Blue, Blush Pink, or Galaxy Black.

Pentium Asus Eee PC to be offered in the Philippines?

In a thread in the TipidPC forum member robcoun posted on October 30, 2007 09:50 AM and on October 30, 2007 02:26 PM that the local Asus distributor, Banbros, has confirmed the existence of Pentium models of Asus Eee PC. Per his posts, Banbros has been testing a unit with a Pentium M 1.2 Ghz with Windows XP installed.

As another member, Cooltoyz, who happens to be an Asus reseller, pointed out that this is interesting since there is no Pentium model available in Taiwan currently.

Anywayz, it appears we will all find out on November 5. At any rate, if the 4G model that PC Corner (see previous post) is offering at PhP17,999 or USD412.15 comes with the webcam, then the price is actually at par with U.S. pricing.

Asus Eee PC 32G?

The screen cap is from Asus' official forum. It shows an entry for Asus Eee PC 32GB motherboard. There is another entry for 16GB.

Wonder how much the price will be for those if and when Asus brings them out.
