Next ASUS Eee PC to use touchscreen after all?

According to Electronista, the next iteration of the ASUS Eee PC will have a touchscreen, as disclosed by Taiwan screen manufacturers. The rumor is that Asus has ordered low-cost, resistive touchscreens that will be for the units to be launched in April. Resistive touchscreens are considered less elegant than capacitive touchscreens (e.g. Apple iPhone's) but will add just USD10 in production cost.

The question is whether overall additional production cost will really only be USD10. If so that would suggest the model retaining its original form factor and not morph into a tablet. A touchscreen in the original form factor would not exactly be convenient to use. Still, having witnessed Asus' inconsistency with the Asus Eee PC product line, anything is possible. :)

Touch panel component makers sampling for future Eee PCs

Touch screen panel makers are currently having their products undergo sampling with Asus in bids to win orders for next-generation Eee PCs which are set to launch later this year.

The second-generation of Eee PCs will support panel sizes of 8-, 9- and 10-inch but only the 9-inch panel versions will feature a touch panel.

The 9-inch touch panel-equipped Eee PCs will adopt four-wire resistive touch screen technology. The panel is expected to add about USD15 to the production costs.
