Increasing Asus Eee PC's Screen Resolution

Jaffa of the Eeeuser forum has posted a hack to increase the screen resolution to 960 x 576 and 1280 x 976 under Linux including the default Xandros install.

It works by spawning a VNC server and then using a VNC client back to localhost. At the moment there are two flaws:

1) Ctrl-Alt-T opens a terminal in the master X session, rather than the one being watched. If launched from a menu, it doesn't render properly.

2)krdc, despite having options to start fullscreen and scaled, seems to ignore the options.

Another look at virtual high resolutions on the Eee PC

The bottom line is the resultant fonts make some of the resolutions difficult to read especially the 1024 x 768 mode. But the 800 x 600 mode is usable despite being a bit squashed. It is better than having to scroll up and down to see the tops and bottoms of windows, which is how the default Asus utility functions.

A 1 minute 640x480 stretch reversible hardware hack

I was thinking today that perhaps its possible to fool the eee pc into thinking there is an external monitor plugged in.

After a lot googling i found the answer!

People installing OSX on intel laptops have been having problems with it BSODing if an external monitor was not plugged in.

Someone found a dead simple fix for it, i tried it on my eee.

Here is how to get the eee to think a monitor is plugged in:



Ive inserted pieces of a paper clip as per a picture from a mugan on the insanelymac forums.




With this the Eee PC detects a secondary monitor, meaning it can be set to clone mode, thereby 640x480 stretched with the standard driver.

Asus Eee PC supports 800 x 600 resolution

Contrary to the oft-repeated specs of 800 x 480, the Asus Eee PC also supports the more conventional 800 x 600 resolution as evidenced by a photo posted (no. 1) by shian0116 in the Mobile01 forum -




Note, however, the Asus Eee PC shown is running Windows XP. There are lots more photos in the thread, although most do not show anything new. Still, it is an interesting thread as it discusses Windows XP on the Asus Eee PC. Translated site can be viewed here.

Is the Asus EEE PC's 800×480 enough?

A blogger recently posted in his (or is it her?) blogsite, Noneus.de the results of his attempt to simulate the Asus Eee Pc's 800 x 480.

"I just made a new Archlinux installation on a virtual machine. The purpose was to test 800×480. The resolution of the 7″ EEE. I used XFCE since its light weight and you can make everything really small. Another important thing is the Gtk+ theme. I used Aurora-compact. You need the newest (1.2) version of the Aurora engine for this theme. For firefox I used an extension (Tiny Menu) and a theme (miniFOX) to make it small. The rest of the apps you see are unchanged.

As you can see the resolution is really small. Especially for OpenOffice. Probably removing most of the toolbars in OpenOffice would help. All the other apps are fine on 800×480. One thing bugs me though. A lot of websites require at least 1024..."
