Win XP in Cloudbook in Taiwan

As the screenshot above clearly shows, Windows XP is now available on the Everex Cloudbook, previously only available with gOS. While this particular model is available only in Taiwan, the way Microsoft has been aggressively pursuing manufacturers, it should only be a matter of time before it becomes available in other countries as well.

Everex CloudBook Review

Notebookreview has a very revealing review of the Everex Cloudbook. Suffice to say, it exposes the various sacrifices the Everex/VIA tandem has to make to bring the subnoteook to the market at its low price of USD399.

The review concludes..."The low-capacity slow hard drive, and slow overall performance make the CloudBook a less than compelling purchase compared to the current generation Asus Eee PC 4G ... despite the much smaller storage space. The fact that the CloudBook cannot support the correct resolutions for widescreen external monitors is another problem for anyone who wants to connect this laptop to a larger screen. The issue of excessive heat build up inside the CloudBook is perhaps the most obvious "deal killer." Who wants to own a laptop that you can only use for 30-45 minutes when connected to the internet before you have to turn it off and let it cool down?"

Everex CloudBook shipments reportedly delayed

The Everex CloudBook's launch will be delayed again, this time due to disruptions caused by recent heavy snowfall in China. Shipments to the retail channel in Taiwan will be pushed back to mid-March.

Wal-Mart finally gets stock of Cloudbook

Wal-Mart finally has the Everex Cloudbook in stock. The USD399 model includes 512MB RAM, 30GB HD, a 7" 800 x 480 LCD, uses a 1.2GHz VIOA processor, and comes with the gOS Rocket operating system.

ZaReason Drops The Cloudbook

The only company that's actually managed to ship the Everex Cloudbook so far has decided to pull out of the Cloudbook business altogether. ZaReason has sent a letter to its customers stating that the company has lost money due to bank processing fees on refunds and has determined it just isn't worth it to sell computers the company doesn't make itself. Officially, the move has nothing to do with the lukewarm (at best) reviews the Cloudbook has been getting, but who really knows?

Everex CloudBook Mini Review Verdict: Needs More Time in the Oven

Laptop has posted a review of the Cloudbook.

Their positive impressions -

Desktop is clean and has easy-to-read icons




Pretty speedy Web surfing




SD Card slot automatically recognized.

OpenOffice

DVI port worked fine.

Negative impressions -

The keyboard is cramped

The touchpad is laughably tiny and is awkwardly located above the keyboard on the right side. The two very small mouse buttons are located on the left side above the keyboard.




Slow boot up time.

Initial difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi network

Many windows extend below the desktop. (Everex says this may be a problem with the evaluation model we were given, but we can’t confirm.)

Screen occasionally looks like it’s about to freeze or crash, but doesn’t.

Meebo worked fine for IM but we could not get the TokBox application to work for video chats, even tough we were asked to allow access to the CloudBook’s camera.

No option to choose a higher resolution.

Summary: No final judgment yet, but so far it’s pretty rough around the edges and you definitely trade off some speed for storage space versus the Eee PC but it has potential especially if Everex addresses the concerns raised.

22-Inch Everex CloudBook "Sub" Notebook In the Works

Paul Kim, Director of Marketing at Everex, says that the upcoming CloudBook is not going to be the only offering from the company. While they expect "equal success" against the Asus Eee PC, they will also be also introducing other variants, such as a touchscreen and a model with a 22" LCD.

CloudBook delayed until late February

In an announcement reminiscent of Asus' delayed launch of its Eee PC last year, Everex announced today the Cloudbook's launch will be delayed for another month as it makes last-minute tweaks to its Linux-based OS, the gOS.

CloudBook was supposed to be available from Wal-Mart Inc. stores and the Walmart.com Web site on Jan 25. Everex had forecast that it would ship 20,000 CloudBooks in its first two months.

For those who are interested, the Everex Cloudbook will be available at Walmart.com starting January 25th at $400. No word yet whether it will be available at Walmart's stores.

Everex to launch Cloudbook Jan 15

According to UMCPortal Everex will launch the Cloudbook on January 15 at a pricepoint of $400. Which places it right in the heart of Asus Eee PC territory.

Moreover, Everex will launch not one but two models. The first is the same model that Packard Bell is marketing. The second one is a so-called Developer version with touchscreen and some kind of expansion interface for modules that will include a webcam, cordless Skype phone, and retro LCD alarm clock, which is the specs of the TGIC Digital Nanobook being sold in Korea.

Everex prepping 'Eee PC-killer' ultra-mobile?

After its successful Walmart launch of the gPC desktop, Everex is now poised to release its 7" mini-portable. To be positioned against the Asus Eee PC, Everex's version will called Cloudbook. Specs include the gOS Linux used in the gPC desktop, 1.3MP webcam, a 1.2GHZ VIA C7. But in lieu of SSD, it will use a 30GB drive and will have a DVI output to support flat-panel displays.

Cloudbook is expected to be formally announced at the Consumer Electronic Electronics show this coming January 7 and will start shipping shortly after that. Prices will likely start at USD399.

A relabeled version, Packard Bell's EasyNote XS, is being sold in Europe.
