Motorola Droid Review

The folks at Gizmodo has reviewed the Motorola Droid and are pretty impressed with it. Their conclusion is simple: If you don't buy an iPhone, buy a Droid. Meaning it is the second best smartphone you can buy, even with some serious flaws including a crappy camera.

The platform also has a lot of potential. Android 2.0 itself is a remarkable update of the Google mobile OS, with new navigation app, new contacts/social network syncing, better email management, better browser though music and video management still fall short of the iPhone.

Motorola Droid First Hands On

Gizmodo has a hands-on of the Motorola Droid, an Android 2.0 phone.

What is of special interest to me is that it has a relatively large 3.7" 854 x 480 display (for a phone, that is) with very crisp text. Its 267 ppi resolution compares favorably with the iPhone's 163ppi. Both its touch screen and QWERTY keyboard work just as well. In short, it can potentially function like a mini Smart-book.

With its ARM Cortex A8 processor (same as the iPhone 3GS's), Android 2.0 is simply fast. Apps open quicker, transitions are instant and smooth, scrolling rarely drags in the browser or maps. Voice command is also supported.

In addition, the Droid has a custom app that turns it into an alarm clock with weather and stuff when you plug into the dock. It also has a dashboard interface that comes up automatically when it's plugged into the car dock and provides quick access to contacts, navigation, voice search, search and maps.
