Nokia to offer ARM-based smartbook, too

It turns out aside from the Nokia Booklet 3G, the company plans to release an ARM-based smartbook as well. While the Booklet 3G will be built by Compal, the smartbook will likely be outsourced to either Compal or Foxconn and is due mid-2010.

Meanwhile more details of the Booklet 3G have been released - Atom processor, 3G/HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth and A-GPS, HDMI port, front-facing camera for video calls, Bluetooth and SD card reader. It weighs 1.25 kg with a 2cm thickness. It will run Windows 7 with a battery life of 12 hours.

Further uniting the Internet with mobile phones and computers, Intel and Nokia today announced a long-term relationship to develop a new class of Intel® Architecture-based mobile computing device and chipset architectures which will combine the performance of powerful computers with high-bandwidth mobile broadband communications and ubiquitous Internet connectivity.

The Intel and Nokia effort includes collaboration in several open source mobile Linux software projects. Intel will also acquire a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP license for use in future products. The companies expect many innovations to result from this collaboration over time.

Nokia seeks Taiwan partners for netbook production

Nokia is currently discussing with Taiwan notebook makers for its notebook plans, with Compal Electronics and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) as the top-two potential partners. The joint design manufacture is a departure from its strategry of outsourcing mostly OEM orders for its handsets.

As for using Atom or Qualcomm's Snapdragon, the company has not yet decided on that, although both Compal and Foxconn have experience with and capabilities for both platforms.

Nokia considering making notebooks

Rumors about Nokia's possible plan to enter the PC industry started late last year, and last Wednesday, its CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo confirmed such plans in an interview with Finnish national broadcaster YLE.

His comments come a week after No 3 PC brand Acer launched a foray into the phone business with eight mobile phone models, joining leader Hewlett-Packard and No. 4 Lenovo in the high-growth space.

While strong profit margins in the smartphone industry attract PC brands, the attraction of the low-margin computer industry is less obvious.
